June 27- July 1

Art and portfolio prep week designed to inspire serious students to explore mediums, improve technical ability and examine their own work through critique. Assignments from direct observation (object, landscape, portrait) as well as guided direction in established individual projects.

Drawing Section choose: Graphite pencil, colored pencil, Conte crayon, oil pastel and or chalk pastel.
Painting Section choose: Watercolor, ink, and or acrylics.

Week culminates in an art salon/reception produced by the artists for friends & family viewing.

Date & Time: 9-4pm July 25-29

Work at your own pace in a fun and social environment. Beginners work on a ‘sampler’ of machine stitches and hand sewing techniques + embellishments will be transformed into the first project. Then choose any from a selection of suggested beginner sewing patterns and projects.

Returning students will work from a selection of patterns selected for their skill level, beginning with an optional fabric shopping trip!

Week culminates in a trunk show event produced by the campers for friends and family.

A survey of '50s style! From Chanel's boxy, collarless suit to yards and yards of ala Balenciaga gowns. From capes and mink stoles (gasp!) to the A-line and heavy eye liner. And don't forget nylons, girdles, gloves, brooches and bee hives! No design or art talent needed in this course which looks back - fondly! at a glamorous time. Advancing students and beginners alike can sketch from instructor supplied templates and references or strike out on their own impressions of styles from the '50s!

You'll need pages and pages of fashion visual 'inspiration,' so begin a collection now. Tear out pages (or make color copies of the pages) from your fav fashion catalogs and magazines. Your neighborhood library will let you check out piles of back issues...make copies. Have friends, neighbors, professional offices save back issues for you. You'll need:

· Full page close-ups of fabulous fashion faces. (Cosmetic ads are best for this).
· Full page images of fashion models striking great poses.
· Images of cool garments.
· Images of accessories like hats, shoes, bags.

Do not bring in fuzzy little photos taken by the paparazzi of your favorite stars. That’s not a fashion photo.

To learn how to see clothing’s details you will need images taken by fashion photographers. These you will find in magazines such as Vogue, Elle; trade magazines; or fine department store catalogs sent out by the likes Neiman’s, Nordstrom’s, etc.

Note: Fashion is not a skin color, a gender, nor a dress size. Your photo collection should reflect your understanding of this.

MS PADILLA graduated from California State University in Los Angeles, and went on to study Surface Design at UCLA. Thus began a 20-year career as a fashion illustrator and fabric designer for apparel and home interiors internationally. Travel research included the major fashion and textile centers of Paris, London, New York, Delhi, Milan. And the places filled with color print and pattern inspiration...Agra, Athens, Antigua.

Available internationally for workshop retreats, exhibitions, juror, private instruction.

Meet the Intern Arielle Antwine 2011

Bonjour! Je m'appelle Arielle Antwine. I'm currently a Junior studying fashion design at the University of North Texas in Denton.Those who know me describe me as confident, intelligent, and goofy. I absolutely adore all things French...couldn't you tell? In fact, I love French so much that it's my minor at UNT. I have a knack for designing costumes and evening wear. My favorite thing to do is fashion illustration.When I'm not hard

at work designing, I'm most-likely listening to new music, at a concert or the movies with friends, or painting.

Ms. Padilla's summer Fashion Camp is a great experience because I get to lend my current knowledge to bright youngsters that are willing to apply it later; making what they learn at age 10, what I have learned at age 20. To intern at this SMU camp is a truly rewarding and unique experience for me as well as the fashion campers; one that I wish I would've had as a young fashionista.

Jourdan Smith studies fashion design at Savannah College of Art and Design(SCAD), where she has gained skills in fashion sketching, designing, sewing and collection production. Fashion has been a passion of Jourdan's from a very young age and she has been sewing and sketching since the age of 11. Upon graduation Jourdan hopes to land a job designing womens's wear at a major fashion house and ultimatley hopes to create her own line. Aside from sewing and sketching, Jourdan enjoys going to the beach, reading fashion magazines, watching movies and playing tennis.

Meet the Teaching Assistant: Katherine Perrine 2011

Kathryn has been a lifelong learner of the arts. Native to Ohio, she moved to Texas in 1982 and began the journey to enhance her artistic skills. She has been sewing since she was 8 years old, later teaching sewing to girls ages 9-18, and traveled to all the major fashion capitols such as London, Italy, New York and Toronto. Taking over 10 classes with International arts instructor and exhibit curator Cynthia Padilla, Kathryn has mastered skills in Soft Pastels, Drawing, Watercolor, On location/Plein Air Sketching, Colored Pencil, Pen and Ink, and Acrylics which has added to her many talents.

Retiring after 25 years service from Nortel Networks, where she was a Human Resource Coordinator, taught Team Building, and assisted in the development of and taught both personal skills and technical classes.

When not involved with her artwork, she enjoys flower gardening, her 3 grandchildren, and playing on the 2010 Women over 40 National Championship Ice Hockey team. She volunteers for the Covington Community Outreach Association and is a member of the Plano Art Association.

She attended Edison State College in Ohio, Richland College in Texas and the University of Texas at Dallas obtaining a degree in Business Management.

Erica Pflughoft (http://ericapflughoft.blogspot.com/) is a student at the University of North Texas currently pursuing her Bachelor's Degree of Fine Arts in Fashion Design. The Fashion Design program at UNT is the best in the south and covers a wide range of skills needed in the industry such as flat pattern making, draping, sketching, illustration, sewing, computer illustration, and computer pattern making. Erica is about to begin her senior year in the program and will be designing and producing a senior collection next spring.

Prior to coming to UNT, Erica designed and produced all of her Homecoming and Prom dress as well as some Halloween costumes during her Sophomore, Junior, and Senior year in high school. Fashion Design has been a passion of Erica's since the 6th grade and she is excited to see where the industry takes her after graduation!

Jessica Mitchell is a 5th year senior attending the University of North Texas, and has just completed the Fashion Design portion of her curriculum and will graduate with a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts and Fashion Design with a minor in Social Science in May of 2011.
Jessica has gained many skills in fashion over the course of 3 years, with little sewing skill prior to being accepted into the program, and finds that the process of continued learning is a worthwhile experience.
Jessica is knowledgeable in Fashion Illustration, Sewing, Pattern drafting, draping, and garment planning, not to mention many other skills associated with the diverse world of fashion design.
She has also completed many works while in the fashion program, including a senior collection consisting of four completed garments. She has also had her work shown in professional venues and competitions such as Career Day and GO Red. http://www.dallascareerday.org/

Ayumi is a senior at the University of North Texas (UNT). She studies fashion design and general business. This upcoming school year, she will challenge her creativity in menswear and her senior collection. Up until now, she has created various pieces ranging from career wear to casual wear to evening dresses. She has participated in a number of competitions such as the Go Red competition and the Art of Can for Red Bull. Currently, she is attempting the Grand Prix, which is an international fashion design competition held in Japan.

Our first week of camp has brought us an abundance of young talent! It is absolutely amazing to watch these young minds work! We structured our week around Alice in Wonderland and the girls had to make and PERFECT a set of three croquis, keep a running "Dream Board" on their own wall panel for inspiration, style a 5+ piece collection, design and make a hatlet, and various other activities to get their creative process going. We ended the week with glimpse into the Mad Hatter's Tea Party. The girls brought their favorite snacks and we family in to view their Fashion Collections and take part in an award ceremony for the girls' accomplishments this week!

Day 1: Students spent a whole day perfecting three croquis in various poses, which would eventually be their base for sketching.
Day 2: Inspiration for the week.... Alice In Wonderland. They watched the video and began to sketch ideas based on the scenery, costumes, etc. in the movie.
Days 3-4: Sketching fashion models, clothing, acessories, pouring over magazines and books. The artists began to present their rough sketchs to their instructor, interns and peers and help each other brainstorm. They then preceded to produce their final fashion illustrations.

Sewing: Tote Bag Project

Ms. Jessica lectured on the importance of cutting and pressing.

After practicing button holes and stitches on some sample fabric, the girls were SO excited to be sewing their final tote bag, passport holder and coordinating accessories!

Ms. Padilla collected the popularity votes as each designer inputed who they thought was the best in several given categories.

Mafia Wars was the popular game to play on break.

Everyone 'dressed to impress' for the final day, which included a Tea Party (planned entirely by the girls) and Awards Ceremony!

Fashion Sketching: Youth (The American Girl)

Be inspired by the dolls and their stories and learn how to draw clothing, accessories and costumes to reflect their time and adventures. There is no requirement to have an American Girl Doll.

Class of 2010
The students this week used American Girl dolls to inspire their creations! They developed croquis the first day and then used paper dolls with historical costumes to help give them pointers on the silhouettes of the clothing. By the end of the week each girl had a full line of clothing and the ability to sketch anything they want! The last day the students got practice planning an event that showcased their work to their friends and family in combination with a tea party.

It might be hard to believe, but the sketches you will see upon visiting the link and scrolling through the class blog, will be that of the kids themselves!!!! Their original designs, their illustrations, their textile designs, color choices, presentation boards, etc.

The college interns, who join us in the Fashion Sketching Camp, are incredulous that these kids are getting the same assignments typical of any university or fashion school.

In many ways, he's a typical 12-year-old boy. But one day you might spend thousands to buy his gowns.

It’s Saturday morning in the Mower household, and 12-year-old Grant looks the part of the typical suburban preteen. He wakes up late, throws on jeans and a striped polo shirt, tames his bed head, and greets me in the living room of the family’s Flower Mound home. But Grant Mower is no typical sixth-grader. The budding fashion designer recently won a Terry Costa prom dress design competition against 11 high school- and college-aged competitors. His winning dress (which was constructed with help from Mom) will be reproduced and sold at Terry Costa in 2012. But Mower didn’t stop there; he debuted two new eveningwear looks at a Fashion Group International of Dallas awards ceremony in November. He plans to have a complete collection soon.

Mower’s interest in objects of beauty showed itself early on. As a toddler, he was fascinated by snow globes and Swarovski crystals. By the age of 7, an appreciation for luxurious dresses had begun to emerge, and, soon after, the fashion sketching began. “I couldn’t stop. I was drawing three to five gowns a day,” he says.

As one might imagine, the youngster’s enthusiasm for fine apparel was not shared by his classmates. Mower got so sick of the teasing that he tried home-schooling for three weeks. But he missed his friends and worried about the extra pressure on his parents, who were already busy raising four kids. He went back to school, finding inspiration in a biography of Coco Chanel.

Today, Mower continues to develop his aesthetic, which he defines as simple, elegant, and effortless. His designs are created for “the socialite who wants to have a ‘wow’ moment without being over the top.” Mower is meticulous about details. From fabrics to seam placement, organza to bias cuts, he knows what he wants.

Mower, 12, will transform these sketches from paper to fabric and then showcase them in his premiere fall/winter collection. “Clothes are what you wear; fashion is who you are,” he says.

Bullies, take note: this kid knows who he is. And it’s not hard to imagine a future in which you’ll have to save up to afford one of his gowns.

Adrienne Escalante Clark studies fashion design at the University of North Texas. Adrienne recently traveled to New York City for inspriration. Her preferrences are watercolor. Mixing patterns is her design signature style. She loves all facets of design and when she's not sketching or sewing, you can find her reading, attending concerts and museums, enjoying Mexican and Thai food, hanging out with family and trying new things.

Nirada Phyakul Award winning University of North Texas graduate has been drawing and painting since the age of three. Besides drawing and working in watercolor, her hobbies include watching TV shows, crocheting, and reading books.

LaKindra Hawkins of Longview, Texas, graduates from attends the University of North Texas May 2008 (yay)! She is majoring in fashion design with a minor in merchandising with plans land a job in the industry that includes travel. Peek inside the fashion sketching studio where young artists learned how to sketch to the industry standards of the fashion biz. But training went far beyond how to draw and paint. They researched trends and themes, developed a signature and line, picked a season, a customer, picked a color line and put together presentation boards....which they then 'pitched' in a mock portfolio presentation. The final day of class ended with a rockin' runway show. Artists took turns modeling and MC-ing, while class mates sketched quick and furious....as in attendance of a Milan or Paris fashion show!
